Biography
Born in 1972, Sarah Hoskins, grew up in Devon, and is now based near Dartmoor in Bovey Tracey. In 1996 she graduated from Wimbledon School of Art, then completed a Postgraduate Diploma at the Cyprus College of Art in 2002. In 2010 she returned to the Cyprus College of Art, initially as an artist in residence, later progressing to Head of Foundation Studies until she returned to the UK at the end of 2012. Since graduating, Sarah has worked continuously as an artist, exhibited at numerous Art Centres and galleries, both regionally and internationally. Sarah’s work is in private collections across the globe. Among other collaborations, in 2017 her artwork was used to create an animated backdrop for the singer Rag ‘N’ Bone Man at Wembley Stadium.
Artist Statement
For me, paintings should be beautiful and ridiculous, with something visually difficult about them. This internal conversation is what gives a painting life.
My process is both visceral and methodical. I work within a formal arena of restricted options to which I respond. My tools include strong colour, disjointed spatial relationships, and repeat pattern. I collect and use information from many places. Some examples are international mask traditions, the decorative arts, textile design, and historical costumes, like those in early Renaissance paintings, and even 20th century animation and cartoons. I am greatly influenced by the sensibilities of mid-century modernism, particularly cubism and bio-morphism, which I perceive as resistant to obsolescence and inexhaustibly fertile. In 2021 I re-introduced a figurative element, that in 2010 I had all but removed from my work. The human brain sees a face when given the smallest amount of information, this is something I like to play with.
